Apprentice Decorators will Battle it out for Master of the Rolls Title
Apprentice decorators from across the country are hoping that their skills will bring them out on top in our national competition next month.
Competitors will go head to head in the Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year competition at The Hub in Doncaster on Tuesday, June 5.
Our annual competition is a nationwide initiative to encourage the next generation of industry professionals and celebrate emerging talent.
The gruelling seven hour-contest will be split into two different categories – a new entrant and senior level.
In an ultimate test of nerve, the senior level competitors will be faced with wallpapering a mock living room, with extra challenges including a fire surround, internal angles and borders as well as inlay panels.
The junior competitors will be tasked with wallpapering a three-sided booth and all work will be judged by an expert panel of industry professionals.
Neil Ogilvie, Chief Executive of the Painting and Decorating Association, said: “Hanging wallpaper is no mean feat, which makes this competition an interesting one.
“The apprentices will be judged under strict criteria, including attention to detail with patterns and joints, that they join correctly and there are no bubbles or blisters in the final finish.
“Competitors will have to make sure there are no marks or lifting edges and surrounding areas are left clean of paste.”
The winners of each competition will be announced at the PDA Conference Gala Dinner at the Hilton Liverpool City Hotel on Saturday, October 27, where they will be presented with a cash prize, trophy and certificate – an accolade they can take with them in their future careers.
