Trainees will be short-listed to go forward to a regional heat - Northern, Southern or Central - where they will undertake a practical test.

The regional heat will require the apprentice to undertake a test piece presented on the day and a set amount of time is allocated to complete the piece. Competitors will also spend around 15 minutes with the judges having an informal chat during which time they may present their NVQ portfolios or any other supporting evidence, written or photographic.
