Apprentices line up for paperhanger contest

19 April 2023

The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year competition has attracted a full complement of entrants a week before its closing date.

As the UK’s largest trade body for painters and decorators, we are helping apprentices to showcase their wallpapering skills as part of a national competition.

Apprentices will gather at Doncaster College and University Centre in June to take on a six-hour challenge designed to test their precision, stamina and skill.

Winners in Junior and Senior categories will be announced at the PDA’s national networking event Gala Dinner in October.

PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie said:

“Hanging wallpaper is a real skill that demands careful preparation and intense concentration combined with precise attention to detail.

“Completing a set design under a significant time pressure is no easy feat, and our Apprentice Paperhanger competition showcases the talent and skills acquired by people starting their Careers in Colour.

“It is always a pleasure to see the hard work – and judge its results – at the competition, which is sponsored by Brewers Decorator Centres, and we look forward to welcoming apprentices from across the UK to Doncaster in June.”

Anthony Wade of Sprayform Painting and Decorating is a PDA Member who has had two apprentices enter PDA competitions, with one winning the Apprentice of the Year contest in 2005 and the second receiving a Special Achievement Award in last year’s Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year.

Anthony said:

“As a one-man-band I’m immensely proud to have put two apprentices through their training.

“The PDA competitions are a really valuable addition to any apprentice’s training and I am delighted to have played a part in bringing quality operatives into the industry.

“I’d encourage other PDA Members to give back to the industry by supporting apprentices through their learning and into their future careers.”

The competition takes place at Doncaster College and University Centre on Tuesday 20th June and finalists will be invited to the PDA’s Gala Dinner on Saturday 14th October where the winners will be announced.
