PDA Paperhanger competition is underway

3 July 2023

The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) has hosted the first part of a nationwide competition for apprentices at Doncaster College and University Centre.

The PDA’s Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year competition has seen record entries this year with 18 apprentices battling it out in Doncaster this month and a second date added in July to cope with demand.

Competing apprentices face a six-hour challenge designed to test their precision, stamina and skill.

Winners in Junior and Senior categories will be announced at the PDA’s national networking event Gala Dinner in October.

PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie said:

“Completing a set design under a significant time pressure is no easy feat, and our Apprentice Paperhanger competition showcases the talent and skills acquired by people starting their careers in colour.

“It is always a pleasure to see the apprentices demonstrate what they have learned, and to judge the competition, which is sponsored by Brewers Decorator Centres.

“We look forward to welcoming apprentices from across the UK to Doncaster in July.”

Anthony Wade of Sprayform Painting and Decorating is a PDA Member who has had two apprentices enter PDA competitions, with one winning the Apprentice of the Year contest in 2005 and the second receiving a Special Achievement Award in last year’s Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year.

Anthony said:

“As a one-man-band I’m immensely proud to have put two apprentices through their training.

“The PDA competitions are a really valuable addition to any apprentice’s training and I am delighted to have played a part in bringing quality operatives into the industry.

“I’d encourage other PDA Members to give back to the industry by supporting apprentices through their learning and into their future careers in colour.”
