2024 Networking Event and Gala Dinner – Best night ever!
Reviewer: Jessica Walter, PDA Member
Saturday night, I found myself at the Liverpool Hilton for the 130th Anniversary Gala of the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA). It was my first time attending – I’m a new Member, fresh on the scene – and let me tell you, I had no idea what I was in for.
From the moment we arrived, it was like stepping into a whole new world: red carpet, cocktail dresses, black ties, and champagne on arrival – the works! Now, I have to confess, I was feeling a bit nervous. I’d never been to something so fancy, and my wardrobe wasn’t exactly red carpet-ready. But, in the spirit of adventure (and on a bit of a budget), I hit up some charity shops, grabbed my partner a suit that made him look like James Bond and I finally wore this over-the-top dress I’d had in my wardrobe for eight years – you know the kind you buy at 2 AM thinking “Sure, I’ll wear this someday.” Well, that someday had arrived !
Any apprehension I had vanished the moment we stepped inside. The PDA crew knows how to throw a party. Everyone was so welcoming, from the Hilton staff handing us champagne, to the Members of the PDA who greeted us like old friends. I barely had time to process my anxiety before I was swept up in the fun of it all.
The highlight of the evening was the Paper Hanging Awards – which was both humbling and inspiring. Who knew wallpaper could bring a tear to your eye? Then, the live band started up, and that was it – we danced like we hadn’t danced in years. Special shout-out to the singer & saxophonist (saxophones at a gala? Yes, please!) and the lead singer’s son, who also performed – the talent was unbelievable.
Neil, the CEO of the PDA, was so kind and welcoming. He even mentioned my name, which left me completely starstruck. And Yvonne, who organised the event, was absolutely lovely, checking in on us and making sure we were having a great time, not forgetting sweet Denice too!
Now, let me tell you about Table 10 – officially the best table at the gala. We laughed, we danced, we celebrated as if we’d all known each other for years. By the end of the night, we were practically a family. It was a proper knees-up, and I didn’t want it to end. Shout out to Costa & Bonita the best dancers at our table and Bill the hat maker a true comedic legend.
The Hilton bed that night? Pure heaven. And the breakfast the next morning? Exactly what we needed to face the world again after a night of champagne and dancefloor antics. We giggled all the way back to London on the train, scrolling through the photos and videos, reliving every hilarious, wonderful moment.
A huge thank you to the PDA for hosting such an unforgettable night. I’ll be back next year, no question. I’m bringing my partner again – and maybe another special dress.
