A landmark achievement will provide a clear route to progression for painting and decorating apprentices.
The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) welcomed the new Level 3 Craft Painting and Decorating qualification, which has been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).
A new occupational standard and End Point Assessment (EPA) for the qualification was created by PDA’s Education and Training Committee, the Painting and Decorating Trailblazer group, Ann Cook Associates and IfATE, with input from PDA Member companies.
PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie, said:
“Our Education and Training Committee has played a key role in opening up new horizons for painting and decorating apprentices.
“This Level 3 apprenticeship is a natural progression from the Level 2 qualification that was approved for delivery last year.
“Both are shaped by industry expertise, creating a clear route to success for those embarking on a career in colour.”
Julie Lawrenson, Head of Learning and Organisational Development at Bell Group is also Chair of PDA’s Education and Training Committee and Chair of the Painting and Decorating Trailblazer Group.
She said:
“I’m delighted that the Craft Painter and Decorator Level 3 (ST1358) has been approved by IfATE for delivery.
“The Department for Education has agreed a funding cap of £12,000 which we hope will encourage training providers to put Level 3 back on the curriculum.
“This was a huge team effort which benefitted from the hard work of professionals at PDA Members including Ian Williams Ltd, Bagnalls, P&S Timbrell and S&C Painting Services Ltd as well as PDA Chief Executive Neil Ogilvie, working with Ann Cook Associates, the Association of Painting Craft Teachers, CITB and IfATE.”
The PDA is Britain’s largest trade body dedicated to the sector and celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. The Association represents painting and decorating businesses of all types from sole traders through to large scale national contractors employing hundreds of operatives.
